Kazakhstan: the President Proposes a Referendum on Nuclear Power

The President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed this Friday the holding of a referendum on the construction of a first nuclear power plant.

“Whether or not to build a nuclear power plant is an extremely important question for the future of our country. I therefore propose to submit it to a national referendum, we will decide later on the precise timetable, ”said Mr. Tokayev during his traditional address to the nation on September 1.

Kazakhstan is the world’s largest producer of uranium, with 43% of total production in 2022, according to the World Nuclear Association.

“You know that opinions differ on the relevance of building a nuclear power plant in our country,” said the Head of State on Friday, while Kazakhstan is regularly plagued by energy crises.

“Kazakhstan, as the world’s largest uranium producer, should have its own nuclear energy production. On the other hand, many citizens and some experts are concerned about the safety of nuclear power plants,” Mr. Tokayev continued.
