The referral came after the prosecution accused him of deliberately and premeditatedly murdering his wife, his parents-in-law, brother-in-law, and three of his children as well as attempted murder of his fourth son, according to a statement by the Public Prosecutor.
The deceased sons were two, three, and four years old. Their mother was in her mid-20s.
His fourth seven-year-old son, who managed to flee the scene, was earlier reported to be dead while receiving medical treatment at the hospital after he was shot.
However, the prosecution denied his death.
The case dates back to 7 March when preliminary investigations at the time revealed that the man was at his parents-in-law’s house in Abu Soliman area to settle a dispute with his wife and take her back after separation.
After she refused to reconcile with him, the accused shot dead his wife and three children, and critically injured his fourth child.
He also shot dead his parents-in-law and his brother-in-law.
The Public Prosecution said on Wednesday it referred the 40-year-old suspect, a low-ranking policeman, to court after listening to the statements of 13 witnesses to the crime, and after examining the forensic reports of the autopsy of the seven bodies and medically examining the eighth person – the fourth child.
Moreover, it reviewed the reports of the General Department of the Criminal Evidence Investigation and examined the suspect’s weapon and compared it with empty shotgun shells found in the scene.
The referral also came after unloading the CCTV cameras that were placed in the vicinity of the crime scene, the statement added.
On 8 March, Alexandria prosecution ordered the detention of the man for four days pending investigation into accusations of murdering his family members.
